Artist Roadmap: A Professional Development Resource Guide

Empowerment Avenue creates opportunities for incarcerated artists to develop their practices, share their work, and participate in the professional art world. Lunarsol partnered with the organization to make its knowledge and resources accessible to more artists inside.

Together, we developed a practical roadmap covering the foundations of a professional art practice—from writing an artist statement and documenting artwork to building a portfolio, promoting creative work, navigating opportunities, and advocating for fair compensation. Artists Halim Flowers and O. Smith helped shape the editorial narrative, grounding the learning experience in lived experience, practical insight, and the power of their stories.

The roadmap gives incarcerated artists a clearer path from creative practice to professional opportunity. It equips learners to document their work, articulate their artistic vision, and engage galleries, publications, collaborators, and collectors with greater confidence.
